Oxygen-Ozone Treatments for Back Pain

Constantly having to deal with lower left back pain is no way to go through life. Some people choose to work through the pain, while others will try everything to make the pain go away. One treatment method gaining some steam is oxygen-ozone therapy. The main reason why the popularity has increased recently is because it’s used in other countries, and it’s much less invasive than surgery.

However, spine care researchers don’t have enough data to support oxygen-ozone treatments as being completely safe and effective. Here is how it works and why it may not be your best bet for back pain relief.

How Treatments Work

Most oxygen-ozone treatments across the country are administered to people with herniated discs, as opposed to regular lower left back pain. The oxygen-ozone gas is injected directly into the affected disc to reduce the volume of the disc. Reducing the volume of the disc will subsequently reduce the pressure on your nerves, which should relieve some of the pain from your herniated disc.

Potential Risks of Oxygen-Ozone Treatments

While the idea of oxygen-ozone treatments may seem safe and effective on the surface, there’s a reason why treatments aren’t available in the United States. There simply isn’t enough research to determine how safe and effective treatments are in the short-term and long-term. In the case of a herniated disc, many people heal on their own over time, so it’s difficult for professionals to determine whether the pain has subsided naturally, or if oxygen-ozone injections actually worked. Also, people with certain illnesses or conditions like paralysis, bladder issues, disc pain or spinal cord issues may experience complications from oxygen-ozone treatments.

Is a Spine Functional Restoration Program Better?

When you visit a reputable spine and orthopedic center, you likely won’t be given the option of an oxygen-ozone treatment for your lower left back pain. Instead, a spine functional restoration program is something people should strongly consider. It works by helping to strengthen muscles, ligaments and tendons that are usually the cause of consistent pain, and stabilize the spine without surgery or invasive injections. The result is reduced pain in the short-term and increased function for the long-term to live a more productive life.
