Surviving the Workday Back Pain Free
Every job has its pros and cons, but one commonality is you can experience back pain no matter what the nature of your job is. Sitting for an extended period of time without getting up and stretching can create pain in your back. But even a job that requires you to be active can cause pain if you have to lift heavy items or do a twisting motion throughout the day.
Regardless of your situation, paying attention to how you’re using your back is important. If your employer offers a corporate wellness program, then you should strongly consider taking advantage of it. Here are some other tips for surviving a workday back pain free.
Practice Better Posture
Your posture plays a huge role in whether or not you experience back pain. Most people slump or slouch while they sit and then stay in the same position for long periods of time. Sitting up straight with your feet flat on the ground and your elbows on your desk are basic alterations everyone should make. But any orthopedic spine center will still tell you to incorporate a pillow or other form of cushion to help support the back and prevent slouching.
Don’t Stay in One Position Too Long
You don’t have to practice excessive active spine care exercises throughout the day, but you should change up your posture occasionally. Sitting in one position for more than about 30 minutes can create some additional pressure on your muscles and discs. Even if it means standing up and doing a quick stretch for a couple minutes, the pressure in your back being released will help prevent pain from occurring.
Stretch or Exercise During The Day
Many employers offer corporate wellness programs to encourage employees to be active throughout the day. Take advantage of these programs if they are available to you. But even if they aren’t you can still take some small steps to prevent back pain. Taking a 15-20 minute walk outside during a break can be beneficial, as well as doing lower back exercises at your desk for a minute or two every hour. These minor additions to your workday can prevent you from having to visit a orthopedic spine center to address major back problems in the long run.
