How to Manage Your Back Pain at Work
People suffer from back pain at work every single day. Managing the pain can seem a lot easier than it actually is sometimes. However, by taking small daily steps, you can help alleviate some of the pain you’re experiencing, and maybe even help your co-workers as well.
It’s common for employees to not express their lower left back pain to their co-workers or management. The only problem is that your not getting the help you need. Some companies offer employee wellness programs or have physicians on staff that can help. This is a great way to boost the welfare of employees, but here are some other tips to help you manage your pain at work as well.
Walk Around or Stretch Frequently
If you sit behind a computer screen for the majority of your day, make it a point to get up and walk around or stretch at least once every hour. Even a quick five-minute walk every hour will go a long way in helping you manage your lower left back pain. Sitting for prolonged periods can put a lot of pressure and strain on your back, so the little amounts of relief throughout the day will add up. Simple stretches while seated, such as rotating your upper extremity back and forth and stretching your hamstrings after your walk will help.
Ask For An Ergonomic Workstation
Another solution you could pursue is asking management for an ergonomic workstation. Many corporate wellness programs will offer reviews of your workstation to determine whether you need a chair with better support or other equipment. Your lower left back pain won’t get any better if you don’t take proactive steps to eliminate or reduce the things that are causing your back pain to begin with.
Discuss Your Pain With Others
Sometimes simply discussing your lower left back pain with other co-workers can be the first step in managing the pain at work. Even if your co-workers don’t complain openly about back pain, chances are they have experienced it previously. This could be a great opportunity to possibly create your own version of a corporate wellness program and go for a walk during breaks, lunch or any other time you can throughout the day. Knowing you aren’t going through back pain alone can help you find creative ways to manage it and help each other out.
