Tips for Frequent Sitters
If you’re like many people, your job requires you to sit at a desk for prolonged periods. People have differing opinions about how good a desk job really is, but everyone can agree they’ve experienced at least a little discomfort in their back as a result. If you fall into that category, here are a few tips to help you get through the day with as little back pain as possible.
1. Stand Occasionally
Not only will frequent standing help reduce the pressure on your lower back, it can get the blood flowing throughout your body as well. Simply standing up for a few seconds every 30 minutes or so will do wonders for your back. If you want to benefit it even more, work in some lower back stretches. These don’t have to be strenuous at all. Just bend over and go to the point where you first feel the stretch and hold it for 30 seconds, then sit back down. You will be surprised at how much better you feel.
2. Leave the Sitting for Work
The first thing many people do when they get home from work is sit on the couch and watch TV or get on their phone. After sitting for eight hours, the last thing you need to do is sit more at home. Find something to do around the house to get moving, or go out for a short walk. At the very least, incorporate some lower back exercises to give your back some relief after a long day of sitting.
3. Walk or Stretch Periodically
There are many creative ways you can incorporate walking or stretching throughout the day. Instead of filling up your cup of water completely, just fill it halfway so you’ll have to get up more often to refill it. You can also take the long route back from the restroom. The point isn’t to go on extended walks or spend an hour doing lower back exercises, but to just relieve tension in your back. Even just a minute or two here and there will give your back the relief it needs.
