Is There a Correct Way to Watch TV Without Hurting Your Back?
After a long day of work or play, sometimes all you feel like doing is laying on the couch and watching TV for hours at a time. While there’s nothing wrong with doing this occasionally, be sure to watch it the correct way so you don’t end up with lower left back pain unexpectedly. Just like sitting in front of a computer at work all day, sitting in front of a TV for an extended amount of time isn’t good for your spine health. However, there are a few simple solutions to ensure you’re able to enjoy some television without causing back pain.
Move Around During Commercials
If you’re watching live programming, stand up and do some lower back stretches or walk around during commercials. And if you’re watching a recorded program, move around a bit instead of fast-forwarding through the commercials. These short two-minute breaks from sitting on the couch will relieve any tension you have built up in your back and allow you to relax again when your program comes back on.
Change Seating Positions Occasionally
When you do get up and move around, try sitting in a different position once you return to the couch. Laying in an awkward position with your head on one armrest and your feet propped up on the other may be comfortable, but it’s not the best position for your back. You don’t have to avoid positions like that completely, though. Just change it up slightly so your spine doesn’t get used to the same position.
Avoid Watching Long Shows On Your Phone or Tablet
Watching long shows on your phone or tablet can be more harmful to your spine health than sitting in the same position for several hours. People usually keep their device in their lap, which causes them to look downward and strain their neck. The solution is to hold the device at eye-level, but most people don’t have the strength and endurance in their arms to hold it for that long. It’s best for your spine health to just watch the show at home on your television so you can align your posture properly.
